1 The Day the Sky Burned

The morning the world ended started like any other.

Seventeen-year-old Lena Valen woke up late, bolted down half a cup of lukewarm coffee, and missed the magtram to Midtown by twelve seconds. Her mother scolded her with a tired smile, her father offered to drive, and her little brother Milo had already hacked her school schedule and swapped out her first class with an extended free period—typical Thursday.

The skyline outside their Brooklyn apartment shimmered with sunlight bouncing off the smart glass towers. Drones buzzed overhead like lazy insects, delivering everything from groceries to luxury handbags. The air was warm, scented with the floral aroma of synthetic cherry trees lining the pavement. New York was alive and breathing in code and chrome.

Lena’s school, Edison Tech Institute, was more machine than building. AI-led classes. Robotic assistants. Even the security guards were autonomous, faceless shells in blue-and-gray armor. Lena didn’t mind. She liked machines. More honest than people.

Her favorite class was Systems Penetration and Ethical Breach Response, a fancy name for "How to Hack Without Getting Caught." She was already top of her class.

She had a knack for finding cracks in clean code, for dancing through firewalls like wind through trees. Her instructors were impressed. The bigger corporations were watching. She’d already received an encrypted offer packet from a Tier-1 AI firm. She hadn’t opened it.

Because she didn’t want to work for them.

She wanted to outsmart them.

She wanted to expose the rot beneath all the silicon smiles and smiling AIs.
